#27 – “BEVERAGE REVIEW – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly” from Bill Ziese

********************************************************************************************************************************

Beverages from Best to Worst

The GOOD

Water – avoid city tap water or “filtered” bottled water. Besides chlorine, tap water usually contains fluoride and aluminum (used as a flocculent to clarify cloudy water). Uncontaminated well water or spring water is best. Drink water when you are thirsty or sweat a lot. Too much water can tax your kidneys.

Unsweetened Tea & Coffee – freshly brewed is best because bottled tea and coffee can lose their antioxidants and flavonoids and bottled beverages might contain excessive fluoride. Tea may protect against cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis. Coffee may help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, gallstones and Parkinson’s disease. Up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is considered safe (about half of that for pregnant women). Coffee has more caffeine than tea so you may drink more tea than coffee.

Milk – skim, 1.0% or 1.5% provide nutrients, calcium and Vitamin D. I personally believe that soy milk has problems associated with it, but many people feel it is safe. If you prefer soy milk be sure it’s fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

Unsweetened Fruit Juices (100% juice) – avoid high fructose corn syrup like the plague. 100% juice costs more and still contains natural sugars, but it’s still better. Limit your consumption because of the calories, but if you can include any blue or red juices (like Concord grape, cherry, blueberry, etc – not artificially colored) you’ll get valuable antioxidants to boot. Vegetable juices are usually low in sugar but high in sodium.

The BAD

Fruit Juice Cocktails – Cranberry cocktails and other “juice drinks” containing grape juice or apple juice are certainly better than high fructose corn syrup. They are too sweet for me. If that’s all that’s available I cut it with twice as much water.

Sports Drinks – electrolytes are good if you do endurance training or strenuous exercise for more than one hour.

Smoothies, Coolattas and Frappuccinos – contain a lot of calories in the form of fat and sugar. A 24 oz Starbucks Vanilla Bean Frappuccino without whipped cream or a Smoothie King Pina Colada Island contains almost as many calories as a Big Mac.

The WORST

Soft Drinks – carbonated or non-carbonated have very low nutritional value and lots of sugar.

Colas – besides the sugars, they contain phosphoric acid. Classic Coke has a pH of 2.53 which is so acidic you would need to drink 32 glasses of water to neutralize it. Besides eating up your teeth, there is evidence that drinking a lot of Coke also removes calcium from you bones.

Diet Drinks – high on the bad list because artificial sweeteners are very bad for you.

Diet Colas – besides the “questionably safe” chemicals, the acid factor is still there, although it is slightly less acidic than non-diet colas.

The WASTE OF MONEY category

Vitamin and/or Herb Fortified Water – you would need to drink gallons to get the slightest benefit from the “added goodies”

It’s YOUR CHOICE category

Alcoholic Beverages – red wine is the most beneficial, followed by white wine, followed by light beer. Mixed drinks often contain too much sugar and you get a double calorie whammy from the alcohol and sugar. Alcohol also tends to increase your appetite.

GILDA’S CORNER – Stress Relief

If your busy schedule is leaving you without a moment to spare, your dog's behavior may tell you it's time to slow down.

Being left alone for extended periods of time can be stressful for your dog. If your pet engages in destructive chewing or suffers from bouts of diarrhea or vomiting, he may be telling you he needs more attention. Devote time to your dog every day--take a walk, toss a ball, or go for a run. He'll be happier, and so will you..

Garlicky SHRIMP with SPINACH & MUSHROOMS

Ingredients for 4 Servings:

16 oz of FRESH mushrooms or 2 oz of DRIED Shiitake, Maitake, Oyster, or a combination
½ cup of water if using dried mushrooms
10 ounce bag of Baby Spinach
16 oz Large Raw Shrimp, peeled and deveined
6 peeled and chopped garlic cloves
2 tbsp of olive oil, divided
1 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tbsp lime juice
½ cup dry white wine
½ cup chicken broth
salt and pepper to taste
2 tbsp of chopped parsley

If you are using FRESH mushrooms, chop them roughly.
If you are using DRIED mushrooms, reconstitute them by placing them in a saucepan with ½ cup of water, bringing to a boil, reducing heat and simmering 5 minutes. Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes. Remove the mushrooms and squeeze dry, saving the liquid. Roughly chop the mushrooms and set aside. Strain the mushroom liquid, bring to a boil and reduce to 2 tablespoons and add to the chicken broth.

Heat 1 tbsp of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and sauté until soft – about 5 minutes. Stir in the spinach and cover. Cook until the spinach is wilted, stirring if necessary. Remove the mushrooms and spinach from the pan and set aside.

Heat the other 1 tbsp of olive oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook for 1 minute or until the shrimp are pink and slightly opaque. Add the chopped garlic and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the chicken broth, wine and lime juice. Add salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 1 minute and add the butter and parsley. Stir until butter is melted..

Spoon the shrimp, garlic and sauce over the spinach and mushrooms. Serve by itself or over pasta or rice.
