DEA Dummies Waste Taxpayers Money (what else is new?)

The US Drug Enforcement Agency reported destroying 4.7 billion wild hemp plants (ditchweed) since 1984. The US imports 250,000 pounds of the same hemp fiber each year from Canada and Europe . Wild hemp has no psychoactive properties and has many industrial uses. Canadian farmers grow 50,000 acres and European farmers cultivate 40,000 acres for hemp.

The primary DEA targets are in the same Midwestern states that grew the same hemp to help the WW II effort. Federal and state governments have spent about $175 million since 1984 to wipe out the harmless, non-cultivated, non-psychoactive weed.

Chinese Garlic Dumped in the US - Another reason to grow your own

10 years ago, the largest US garlic company planted 1200 acres of garlic. Today they plant less than 300. In 2001, Chinese growers found ways to get around the 377 percent tariff and flooded the US market. Chinese imported garlic went from less than 1 million pounds in 2000 to 112 million pounds in 2005.

Pharmaceutical Perils

In 1986 there were less than 900 prescription medications available in the US . Now there are more than 8000. An estimated 106,000 hospitalized patients die each year from adverse reactions from drugs that were properly administered by medical professionals. Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen cause about 16,000 deaths a year. In contrast, the American Association of Poison Control Centers reports that dietary supplements lead to about 10 deaths a year – mostly from overdoses.

You probably know the leading causes of death in America are heart disease, cancer and stroke. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, adverse reactions to drugs are the fourth leading killer.

Children, in particular, are in danger because most drugs that are given to children are never tested on children. Instead, pharmaceutical companies extrapolate data from adult studies to estimate dosages for children. Children are the guinea pigs for most of the pediatric medications.

Seniors are also in great danger. As people age, their livers and kidneys are less able to process drugs. This causes the drugs to be more potent, last longer and more likely to cause dangerous reactions. Seniors account for 34% of dispensed prescriptions, yet people over 65 represent only 15% to 20% of the participants in clinical drug trials.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not protecting the public from dangerous drugs. The drug companies and the FDA are too close. Many drug company executives are former FDA employees and the FDA gets much of its funding from the drug company research fees.

To protect yourself:

1. Before taking any new drug, learn about the dangers and weigh them against the benefits. Ask your doctor and pharmacist about dosages, whether to take it on an empty stomach or with meals, side effects and what to do if adverse reactions occur.

2. Make a list of all the medicines you are taking – prescriptions, OTC drugs and supplements. Include the name, strength, dosage, frequency, why you are taking it and the date you started taking it. Include the names and phone numbers of your doctors. To receive a free card by mail call the University of Connecticut Health Center at 1-800-535-6232 or download it from <http://health.uchc.edu/medicard/index.htm>

3. Learn about drug interactions. Read drug package inserts. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all your drugs and supplements and inquire about possible interactions.

4. Replace nutrients which become depleted by drugs. Consult “The Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook” by Ross Pelton, published by Lexi-Comp.

5. Be extra cautious with new drugs. Sometimes it takes years to discover problems. Stay with tried-and-true or request the lowest possible dosage if you must take a new drug.

6. Choose natural therapies. Find a holistic doctor at <www.acam.org> or <www.naturopathic.org>.

GILDA’S CORNER – Cold Tootsies

No matter how much fur Fido is wearing on his body, his feet have little protection from winter's chill. Here's how to spare his feet from the deep freeze.

Keep the hair on your pooch's feet trimmed short to discourage ice from clinging to them and making painful little frozen nuggets between his toes. And before going out, coat his paws with a small bit of something greasy that will stick to the pads, like petroleum jelly or a spray of cooking oil. When you return, wipe his feet, especially if your streets or sidewalks are salted. Or make winter walks even easier -- for both of you -- with insulated, slip-proof doggie booties.

INDIAN POT ROAST with DUMPLINGS

3-4 pound Pot Roast
6 cloves of Garlic
4 tbsps Butter
Salt to rub the roast
Flour to coat the roast
1 large Onion, thinly sliced
12 whole Peppercorns
12 whole Allspice
1 Bay Leaf, crumbled
1 tbsp Horseradish, grated
½ cup Dry Red Wine
½ cup Water

Mash the garlic and sauté in the butter. Rub the meat with salt and flour and brown it well on all sides in the butter. Lay the roast on a bed of thinly sliced onion in a large Dutch Oven or any pot with a tight fitting lid. Add the spices and seasonings and pour the wine over the roast. Cover tightly and simmer 3-4 hours until the roast is tender. This may be done in the oven or on top of the stove. Add the water over the roast as it cooks to make an ample supply of gravy. If you want to add carrots, add them to the pot for the last hour. Add the dumpling mixture for the last 12 minutes to absorb the flavors.

DUMPLINGS

2 cups of Flour
4 tsps of Baking Powder
½ tsp Salt
1 scant cup of Milk

Sift together the dry ingredients and add the milk gradually. Drop by the spoonful into the gravy and cook with the post roast during the last 12 minutes of cooking.
